Youth Outreach

Chicago Public Schools
We are an official CPS vendor and Ingenuity Visual Arts Partner with the Chicago Public School District. As such we are trained to accommodate the needs of the schools in relation to National Standards and the Danielson Framework. Our program can be incorporated into the school day of any Chicago Public School as an in-residence program or as an afterschool program. Several high schools have opted to bring their students to our studios for a semester-long workforce development program. Our studio is also available for one-day or multi-day field trips and professional development. The possibilities are many. Please download our arts partner report here or contact us for a consultation.
After School Matters
Our organization participates in the After School Matters Apprenticeship program for teenagers. All Chicago Public School high school students are eligible to apply through the ASM Portal for one of our apprenticeship programs. The mission of Urban Threads Studio apprenticeships is to teach 21st century skills using textile arts techniques. These skills are divided into three components and encompass visual arts skills, organizational skills, and technological skills. All learned skills are transferable to the workplace and across industries. Textile, thread and fiber technology increase every year in their electronic, visual, interactive, and 3D approaches. Urban Threads Studio is committed to exploring and teaching wearable technologies and is excited to offer programs with innovations of our future. This is a rigorous program.

Textile Art Workshops are easy to set up and a fantastic learning opportunity to help children and youths develop fine motor skills, perceptual thinking, and creative problem-solving in an afterschool or summer program for kids and youth of all ages! All of our classes are curated to adhere to the CPS Visual Art Instruction Guide for Expression and Self-Discovery and are sequentially offered according to each school’s or organization’s bench marks. We operate strictly within your school’s and/or organization’s guidelines. Please contact us for a consultation.
Kids Adventures in Textile Arts at the Studio
Our kids (Ages 7-15) workshops take place on two Saturdays of every month. During the Spring Break we offer a 1-Week Introduction to Sewing and during the Summer Break we offer a 4-Week series of project-based beginner sewing camps. To register for one or the other, please check our workshop schedule for upcoming Kids Adventures in Textile Art workshops and for our Spring and Summer camps.
